Day 6: Walking Around Bonaire

We leave the ship a bit later than what we had planned.  Once we are off we knew it was going to be a beautiful day!  I had already figured out where we were going, another "first" to a resort.  We normally take a water taxi (ship’s excursion) to Klein Bonaire, but we wanted to do something different this time.  To go along with our many “firsts” it was only appropriate to do our own thing on this island.

We walk out the security gate and head right along a road (Kaya CEB Hellmund) or south of the port.  Along the way we see several dive spots including this one.  Remember the new wood dock that I mentioned in the last post?  Well, there’s fellow cruiser’s taking advantage of this pier:

We walk as far as we can go along Kaya CEB Hellmond (road) and realize we are at a side gate of the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort.  No one is manning the locked gate.  So we head back one block to Kaya Gresia and then make a right onto Bulevar Julio A Abraham (road).  Remember we need to keep walking south.  Along the way, we see several different modes of transportation on this island:

Here’s Divi Flamingo Beach Resort’s main entrance.  This resort is on my list, to stop and snorkel, but we decide to keep walking to our destination.

Here’s a Model A (1930) parked on the side of the road:

This looks like a good restaurant to try:

We continue walking south along this road.  Did I mention it’s hot and dry in the Southern Caribbean and it’s only mid-morning?

We come across this local dive shop along the way:

This is an amazing find…VIP Diving:

Walking towards the back of the dive shop is a dive pool, classroom, and lounge area.  How cool is that?

We chatted with the dive employees and asked about future snorkeling sites off the beach:  1,000 steps, Monkey Beach, Te Amo Beach, and Divi Flamingo Beach to name a few.  They mention that we need to mind our personal belongings on the public beaches.  Inside the resorts, we should be fine.  Hubby and I purchase a local Bonaire map.  I’m collecting the local currency from the islands.  Much to my dismay we receive US coins as change.  This is when we learn about the local florin conversion to USD.

We continue on our way to our final destination…Plaza Resort Bonaire.
